Hair Fibre 101:

Understanding Hair Fibre Health

What Your Strands Are Trying to Tell You

Frayed or split ends

Lack of shine or gloss

White dots at the ends (a breakage marker)

Tangling easily

Inconsistent texture along the strand

What Is Hair Fibre?

Hair fibre refers to the visible part of the hair that grows out from the scalp. It’s made primarily of keratin, a strong protein formed in layers, bound by lipids and protected by a delicate outer layer called the cuticle.

When healthy, hair fibres are smooth, elastic, and reflective. But when the integrity of the fibre is compromised, breakage, dullness, and damage can occur.

Common Hair Fibre Issues

Chemical Damage: From bleach, relaxers, perms, or aggressive color treatments.

Mechanical Stress: Caused by rough brushing, tight styles, or constant heat styling.

Environmental Stress: UV rays, wind, hard water, and pollution can erode the cuticle over time.

Hydration Imbalance: Dehydrated hair becomes brittle, while over-moisturized hair may feel gummy.

Protein Deficiency or Overload: Hair needs the right balance of strength (protein) and softness (moisture).

pH 4.5–5.5

The Role of pH in Hair Health

Hair and scalp thrive in a slightly acidic environment (pH 4.5–5.5). When this balance is thrown off (from harsh shampoos, over-washing, or chemical treatments):

Cuticles lift and frizz increases

Colour fades faster

Moisture escapes more easily

Using pH-balanced products helps seal the cuticle, lock in nutrients, and support long-term fibre strength.

HydratE

Hydration & Hair Fibre

Hydration doesn’t just come from products — it starts from within. Dehydration can:

Make strands more prone to snapping

Reduce elasticity and flexibility

Create a rough, brittle texture

Tip: Prioritize water intake, eat water-rich foods, and layer your hair products from lightest to richest to avoid surface buildup.

Climate & Fibre Integrity

Dry Air = brittle hair. Use leave-in treatments and humectants.

Humidity = frizz and swelling. Use smoothing or anti-humidity serums.

Cold weather = static and breakage. Wrap hair in silk or use moisture-sealing products.

Your routine should evolve with the seasons to maintain optimal hair fibre health.

Hair Fibre as a Feedback Tool

Hair fibre is one of the first indicators of overall wellness:

Poor nutrition, stress, and hormonal shifts all impact texture and strength

Frequent breakage or slow growth may signal deeper internal imbalances

Hair tells a story. Are you listening?
